On January 1, 2022, the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin denied prison officials’ motion to dismiss a civil rights case filed by Civil Rights Group on behalf of the estate of a man who committed suicide at Columbia Correctional Institution. Agreeing with the estate, the Court found that the man’s claims survived his death and the allegations were “sufficient at this early stage to suggest that each of the defendants knew that [the man] was at substantial risk of harming himself and intentionally disregarded the risk.”
